Prepare for Safe Holiday Travel with a Roadside Emergency Kit
AAA estimates 55 million travelers will hit the road this Thanksgiving, and
120 million will travel from December 24 to January 2. While holiday road trips are exciting, mechanical breakdowns and accidents can happen if vehicles aren’t properly maintained. Poor maintenance contributes to over 20% of traffic accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
To avoid becoming part of that statistic, take your vehicle in for a safety check before your trip. If you experience a breakdown, stay calm and address the issue as soon as possible.
Build a Simple Roadside Emergency Kit
Here are essential items to include in your kit:
- Emergency triangle safety kit and battery-operated road flares (avoid flammable flares).
- Flashlight (mobile phone light isn’t enough).
- Reflective vest (OSHA Class 3) and sturdy gloves.
- Safety glasses, blankets, first aid kit, and personal medications.
- Fully charged phone and a portable charger.
- Water for hydration.
Ensure that others know your travel plans and routes. Using a map app to share your progress can be helpful.
Fire Extinguisher Tips
A portable fire extinguisher can be useful, but make sure it’s the right type and weight. Learn how to use it properly before you need it.
Preplan and Practice
Consider simulating a breakdown in an empty parking lot. Practice calling emergency services, roadside assistance, and family contacts. In an actual emergency, stay in the car with your seatbelt on, turn on your flashers, and park as far off the road as possible.
Safety First
When help arrives, stay in your vehicle and let responders approach you. Keep your emergency kit in an easily accessible spot, and stay prepared for any situation.
Drive safely and enjoy the holidays!
